Club Tournament 2017 - Finals
The first weekend in July saw the culmination of our Annual Knockout Tournament, with The Club Finals.
First up on "Peoples Friday" 30th June was The Gentlemen's Doubles Final. This match featured James Messenger and Liam Shakeshaft, the number one seeds against the number three seeds Andy field and Anthony Hulmes. The match kicked off shortly after 7.30pm with "the crowd" in heightened anticipation. Could the number 3 seeds overcome the power of James and Liam?
Andy served first, and straight away held serve to love. Liam then matched this, with a love service game of his own. Now it was "Ant's" turn which he duly held 40-15. Would this be a hold for all four combatants in the early stages? Alas not. In the fourth game, the last to serve was James, who dropped serve to go 1-3 down. Andy, now dominating the match once again held his service game to love. Then Liam was broken allowing the "Ant" and Andy duo to go 5-1 up in the first set. Although James and Liam fought back getting a further two games, the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Andy and Anthony took the first set by six games to three.
In the second set, games initially went with service. Two consecutive breaks of serve in the middle saw matters back on level terms. The crucial break however came in the ninth game when Liam was broken allowing Andy and Ant to go 5-4 up, to serve for the match. Andy "the rock" held his nerve, and never faltering duly served out the match to take The Championship 6-3 6-4.,
The following day, Saturday afternoon 1st July was the turn of the second ( recently inaugurated ) event, The Gentlemen's Doubles Plate Final. Mark Adams and Chris Holt faced Colin Fordham and Viktor Pavlov. Mark and Chris served first and raced off to a 3-0 lead, breaking Viktor's service in the process. Colin then put his team on the scoreboard holding his serve to love. At 5-4 Viktor served to give his team the first set, 6-4. Second set then, and Mark and Chris race to a 5-2 lead. But The Colin / Viktor duo were not giving up that easily, clawing their way back to five games all. Could they reach the finishing line? Chris served to give his side 6-5. Now Viktor? 0-15 / 15 all / 15-30 / 30 all / 30-40. Game and second set Mark and Chris, 7-5.
Final set, Mark to serve, which he promptly dropped ! A few more breaks on both sides eventually saw Colin serving at 5-4 to take the match. Could these boys do it? 'Fraid not folks! Incredibly, Colin lost his serve to love. Chris then held, and with Viktor subsequently broken Mark and Chris claimed the match and Championship, 4-6 7-5 7-5.
Sunday Afternoon 2nd July. The final day. Men's Singles, and to finish, The Mixed Doubles. AND I've got a train to catch to Wimbledon, so this lot better not take all day about it !
The Gentlemen's Singles. Well the seeding has worked out O.K. No 1 seed and defending Champion James Messenger is taking on the No 2 seed and 2015 Champion, Phil Bennett. Last years' final also featured these two protagonists, when Phil sustained an injury. I'm hoping both players will stay 100% fit, both for their sake and the "crowd." For I know both players will be giving their all, 110% Phil serves first from The Royal Club end, and James takes the game 30-40. James serves, Phil takes the game 30-40. It's obvious both players are nervous. Now both players breathe in deeply and settle into the match, games now going with serve. Six games all, tie break. The closely fought breaker gives James the first set, 7 points to five. On to the second set. At least no injuries , apart from some exhaustion. Mind you, it is rather warm under that sun, shining from a clear blue sky. I'm hot, and I'm doing nowt ! First three games and three breaks of serve. Not the return of nerves again? A few lobs, some fantastic passing shots, great half volleys and a couple of drop shots. Did Phil touch the net then? This match is class, it has everything. All things must come to an end though. In tennis there are no draws, there can be only one winner. And so it was on that Sunday afternoon 2nd July, James broke Phil's serve in the tenth game of the second set to win the match, and Championship 7-6(5) 6-4. To gain his second consecutive title.
And so to the finale, The Mixed Doubles Final, Roy Coleman and Becky Lewis. And on the other side of the net, David Hampson and Ann Deans. Roy kicked off the proceedings with a 40-30 service game. David then held his service 40-15. Becky also held serve but it was Ann who was broken in the 4th. This was the only break in the set. But it was sufficient to allow Roy to serve it out six games to three. In the second set both Roy and Becky were broken. This allowed David and Ann to take the second set, 6-4. So honours even, final set. David serves first - Hold. Becky - Dropped. Ann - hold. Roy - hold. The score is 3-1 to David and Ann. It's nip and tuck all the way now until at 5-6 down Roy is serving to stay in the match. Advantage David and Ann. Game, set match and Championship, David and Ann. To be honest, the match was not played in the best of spirits, mais c'est la vie !
So that concludes the 2017 Tournament. Until next year ? Let's hope we get more interest from the girls eh !
Right that's it, see ya.. I'm off to Wimbledon now to see how the big boys (and girls) do it.

Club Tournament 2017 - Week Two
The Annual Club Knockout Tournament continued last week unabated, with the shock withdrawal in The Men's Doubles of the Packwoods, Dave and Luke. This let the second seeds duo, Phil Bennett and John Ettinger through to the Semi Finals. Where, on "Peoples Friday," 16th June they faced The number 3 seeds Andy Field and Anthony Hulmes. With Phil serving first, Andy and "Ant" immediately broke to take a one love lead. Two more breaks of service followed before Ant finally held serve to go 3-1 up. John was later broken in the crucial seventh game which allowed Andy and Anthony to take the first set by six games to two. In the second set, Phil once again served first and was immediately broken to love. Andy and Anthony then held serve throughout the second set to take the set and match 6-2 6-1. And into their first final.
Later on in the evening, "The Crowd" were treated to an exciting Mixed Doubles match between Graham Deans and Megan Quayle AND Roy Coleman and Becky Lewis. This match was played in jovial spirits. However, following a rather exuberant overhead smash from Roy, the call for "new balls please" immediately took on a completely different meaning for Graham. In the event, Roy and Becky triumphed, reaching their first Mixed Doubles Final, 7-5 6-3.
Monday evening 19th June saw James Messenger, the number one seed in The Men's Singles draw take on David Hampson, in the quarter finals. Dave initially made some gains in the first set. But James eventually settled in to the match which he duly took, 6-2 6-2.
The Tournament continues this Friday evening 23rd June, with yet another "Peoples Friday." Finals weekend will be Friday Evening 30th June - Gentlemen's Doubles.

Club Tournament 2017 - Week One
he 32nd Annual Club Knockout Tournament got under way at Penketh Tennis Club last Friday evening, 9th June. Defending Men's Singles Champion and number one seed, James Messenger opened up proceedings with the defence of his title. His first round opponent was Anthony Hulmes. James immediately began to dominate the first set by breaking Anthony's service twice, to go five love up. Anthony then held serve to make it 1-5. However, James now had the "bit between his teeth" and served to take the set 6-1. Was this to be a rout? Not a bit of it. Although Anthony was broken in the first game of the second set, he immediately broke back and held his nerve to level the set at six games all. So, into a tie break. The comeback faltered, and James went on to take the game, set and match 6-1 7-6(4)
Other notable matches that Friday evening featured the number three seed Liam Shakeshaft against Daniel Meadows. This saw Liam come safely through in straight sets. Later on in the evening, as the spectators "warmed?" to the proceedings a men's doubles match took place between Chris Holt and Tommy Lawless against Simon Pavlov and Viktor Pavlov. The partisan support for the "underdogs," aided by the liquid refreshments on offer was vociferous. However, the favourites, Chris and Tommy took the match 6-1 6-0.
Saturday afternoon's play saw the number two seed safely through against moi, 6-0 6-0. In another thrilling match, Chris Holt defeated Paul Sheeky 7-5 6-0. On Sunday afternoon it was the turn of former Champion Graham Deans to fall in the second round. He was beaten by John Ettinger 6-1 6-4. Obviously not without a struggle in the second set.
There will be more goings on down at The Club this week on Monday, Wednesday, and "Peoples Friday," 16th June.

Club Tournament Results
The week ending Friday, Saturday and Sunday 26th June saw The Finals of The Annual Knockout Tournament here at Penketh Tennis Club.
First up, on Friday evening, after a delay due to rain was The Gentlemen's Doubles. In this, Phil Bennett and John Ettinger took on Chris Holt and James Messenger. Chris and James, who were unseeded, had put out the number 2 seeds Anthony Hulmes and Tom Lawless(Jnr) in the Semi Finals. From the outset, Phil's first service seemed to desert him. This was pounced on by Chris and James who immediately went two love up. From here on it was neck and neck until Phil and John finally edged through the first set on a tie break. Chris and James stepped up the pressure as yet again Phil struggled with his first serve. In the second set Phil was broken twice as Chris and James took the set 6-2. So, into the final set under gloomy skies. James service was broken in the fifth game but the duo immediately broke back taking Phil's serve. From here on both James and Chris held serve, breaking John in the eighth game. James then went on to serve out the match and Championship, which they took 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3.
Because of the late start, The Ladies' Doubles Final was played at the same time as the Men's. Marie Lawless and her partner put on a convincing display beating Ann Deans and Geraldine Gange 6-0 6-1 to take this year's Championship.
Saturday Afternoon 25th. The Final of a brand new event for 2016, The Gentlemen's Doubles Plate. In this event, the losers of the quarter finals in The main Gentlemen's Doubles event were entered into a draw with partners being drawn "out of a hat." This saw the unlikely pairings of Tom Burton and Calvin Campbell, seeded one. They were up against Chris Ainsworth and Tommy Lawless(Snr.) Tommy had been put in as a "wild card entry" following the withdrawal of David Hampson due to injury. In the first set Calvin and Tom raced to a 3-0 lead. Over the next nine games however, Chris and Tommy fought back tooth and nail to level the set at six games all. But it was Tom and Calvin's superb serving and forehand drives that clinched the tie break for them, which they took 7-1. In the second set, both Tom and Calvin held serve either to love or 40-15. Chris was broken in the twelfth game which gave Calvin and Tom game, set, match and Championship 7-6(1) 7-5.
The finale on Sunday Afternoon 26th June. Under a dark leaden sky, filled with black rain clouds, The Ladies' Final eventually got under way. Marie Lawless vs Paula Holt. This was a real friendly affair with both ladies' sitting together on one side of the chair at change of ends. Discussing, well what women discuss at change of ends! But when it came to getting the job done, the four time Champion Marie did it in style, beating her opponent pretty convincingly, in straight sets, 6-1 6-0 to take her fifth singles title.
And then came the rain. Not a downpour, but a light, persistent, miserable drizzle which continued throughout the afternoon. Both players in The Gentlemen's Singles Final indicated their willingness to play on. And so it was on this dreary Sunday afternoon the number 1 seed and defending champion Phil Bennett took on The number 3 seed, 17 year old James Messenger. In the first set, Phil broke James's serve three times to take the set six games to three. Then disaster struck. At three games to love in the second set, Phil fell down with a leg injury. Obviously struggling, Phil fought bravely on. But James now had the upper hand. He took the second and final set, match and Championship 3-6 6-4 6-1 to win his first P.T.C. Title. The continuing heavy rain now meant that play was abandoned for the day.
So then, Wednesday Evening 29th June. Due to a lack of publicity, (my fault, sorry) there were not many spectators. What is the singular for audience? Audiente perhaps? There, I've just invented a new word. Thanks for turning up with your camera Ellis! The Mixed Doubles Final. Tom Lawless(Jnr) and Faye Phillips (1) vs Chris Holt and Marie Lawless (2) I know this is going to be a bit of a grudge match so I have to keep my wits about me. Chris serves first and takes the game to love. Barely audible grumbles from Tom, questioning Chris's parentage. I'll have to watch this lot! Then Tom serves, also to love. Then Marie, to love. Hmmm this is not like P.T.C. players. And now it's Faye's turn to serve, which she drops to love. Followed by Chris which he also drops. Normal service resumed then. Faye's loss of service in the eighth game leaves Chris serving for the set which they duly take by six games to three. Two further losses of service by Faye in the second set left Marie serving for the match. Forty love, game, set match and Championship. Chris and Marie, 6-3 6-2.
Phew! All over for another year. Time to watch Wimbledon. Until next year then? Hmmmmm?

Club Tournament- Update
On Wednesday evening 8th June, The 30th Annual Club Knockout Tournament moved up a gear. There were six scheduled matches, all played in hot, stifling muggy conditions.
First up on "the show court," was the holder, and defending Champion in The Gentlemen's Singles, Phil Bennett. Up against Phil was John Ettinger, no slouch when it comes to moving around the court. In the event, Phil's serving, passing shots and wrong footing John took its toll. Despite a valiant defence from John, Phil took the match in straight sets, 6-1 6-0
At the same time, over on court 3, young Simon Pavlov took on four times Champion, Graham Deans. Despite a tremendous effort by Simon, Graham's debilitating constant lobbing proved decisive. And all this whilst Simon was playing from the back of the court, fearing (one presumes,) to come to the net ! The former Champ won the match 6-3 6-1.
In the third Men's Singles match, Chris Holt took on Mark Adams. Again, Chris's service game proved too much for Mark. Chris also produced some superb ground shots forcing errors from Mark. The outcome was in no doubt. Chris took the match in straight sets, 6-2 6-2.
Meanwhile, back on court 2, two Ladies' Doubles matches were played. The first featured Ann Deans and Geraldine Gange against Alison Adams and Linda Broadbent. It may be worth noting at this point, that a member of The Gange family has been represented in this Tournament since its inception in 1983, thirty three years ago ! This match was full on, with Ann and Geraldine fighting tooth and nail. They took the match beating Alison and Linda 6-3 6-3. So a good result for the Deans household. Not so good for "The Adams Family." Pun definitely intentional !
The other Ladies' Doubles match was a much more relaxed affair. This featured Karen Ettinger and Emma McEvoy pitched against Helen Burton and Maria Hughes. The game was played at a leisurely pace with all four girls stopping at change of ends to discuss important tactics. Such as, the pattern on the bedroom curtains, whether the right tops / lipstick had been worn for the pre match photo's, etc., etc. Still, as is the nature of tennis it can only end with only one winner. And that was Helen and Maria, who took the match 6-0 6-0.
The final match on the main show court that warm evening was The number 2 seed Tom Lawless (Jnr) against Viktor Pavlov. Tom's heavy top spin serving meant that Viktor was sometimes taking the return at shoulder height. Tom's passing shots won him the match. He now goes through into the quarter finals to meet either Chris Holt or Jack Ettinger.
There are more dramas to come I am sure, as The Tournament progresses over this weekend, and into next week.

Vintage Tennis Tournament- Results
The club held a fantastic vintage tennis tournament last Saturday (7th May). Over 24 players, all dressed in white descended onto the courts of Penketh hoping to win the grand prize. There were two awards; Helen Burton won the overall tournament, securing the most games out of all players (well done Helen!). Our other prize was for "best dressed", which was won by our chairman, Mark Adams, who dazzled the crowd with his.... erm... `interesting` choice of attire (surprisingly, it was the first time he's won a prize at Penketh in his 19 years at the club, unfortunately not for his tennis ability on this occassion!). Many thanks must go to Phil for wonderfully running the tournament, Viktor and Radi for laying on some delicious food, and Rob, Colin's son, for keeping us all entertained in the evening with his wonderful musical skills. The event was also featured in The Warrington Guardian! See below a selection of the best images from the event:

Vintage Tennis Tournament
The club has organised a Vintage Tournament which will take place at the club on Saturday 7th May at 2pm. It will be played with wooden tennis rackets and vintage white balls (rackets can be loaned out for the day). In order to add to the atmosphere of this retro event, everyone is kindly invited to dress in white and bring with you as much of the spirit of the 50s - 70s as possible, no matter in what shape or form. There will be a prize for the winning player but also a prize for the best/funniest attire. The main objective of this event is to have fun, while paying tribute to these glorious years. For some of us, of course, this may be an opportunity to achieve something as players… at last!
Entry for the tournament will be priced at £4. There will also be a barbecue and other food that will be provided at a cost of £5. Finally, Rob would be happy to play the piano again in the evening and those who would enjoy staying may not find it too costly to add another £4 for this. We can also offer a discount of £1 if you opt for all three.
For practical reasons, we decided to limit the number of players taking part in the tournament to 24. So, to book your place, please contact Viktor.
